Led by Varsity basketball player Christian Stewart, the three Shades Valley Boys Basketball Teams (Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman) have for the past three weeks collected new socks to be donated to the 215 Homeless Men at the downtown Birmingham Firehouse Shelter.

Wanting to make a difference and becoming more empowered to create solutions from his current membership to YouthServe’s Youth Philanthropy Council, Christian mobilized team members through a Team Challenge to collect the greatest number of socks in their community. Collection boxes and posters have also been placed around the high school in addition to awareness through daily announcements, email blasts, and through the school website.

The deadline for donations is Tuesday, December 13, while a huge delivery of socks by the teams to the Firehouse Shelter will take place at 4:00 on Friday, December 16, 2016.

We ask that you please cover this event to bring about more awareness to the needs of the homeless and to also promote youth leadership and positive community involvement to help others even off the courts.
