JCIB APP Team Earns a “Best in Nation” in Verzion Challenge

A team of students from Shades Valley High School, Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School in Irondale is one of eight national teams to win the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. The contest challenges students to develop mobile application ideas that could be used to solve problems in the students’ communities or schools.

The Alabama team’s achievement was celebrated with an event at SVHS Tuesday. The team’s winning app concept, called “Vocal”, will allow users to organize and manage their volunteer events.

The app would allow users to manage their time by tracking hours and showing how they are helping out in the community.

The SVHS/JCIBS team members are Jerry Hu, Ryan Cook, Kevin Jackson, Chris Arora, Cole Crownhart, and Courtney Barkley. Steven McDaniel is teacher/advisor.

This student team will work with the MIT Media Lab to develop its concept into a working app on the brand new tablet the team members also received Tuesday.
