6/24/2014 – Irondale citizens attended the first ever Financial Town Hall meeting. City Clerk, James Stewart organized the meeting to share in depth information on the city’s financial health. ” I’m focused on local government becoming more transparent with regards to it’s finances, ” said Stewart. He also announced plans to post a monthly financial report card on the front page of the city’s new website (www.cityofirondaleal.gov).
Stewart discussed what he called the “Three Myths About Municipal Finance.” He elaborated on misconceptions most people have about city finances including the topics:
- No new taxes
- Does money grow on trees
- Just cut expenses.
A variety of topics were covered including the city’s recent Standard & Poors credit rating upgrade from A+ to AA. This is a major accomplishment for a city the size of Irondale and speaks to the city’s sound financial management. A copy of the actual Standard & Poors, RatingsDirect report was provided to those in attendance.
The informal atmosphere and audience participation made for a very interactive and informative meeting. Stewart announced plans to hold Financial Town Hall meetings quarterly.
