In August 2015, the City of Irondale appointed Ken Atkinson Chief of Police. Chief Atkinson comes to Irondale with over 25 years of law enforcement experience, most recently serving the Homewood Police Department for 23 years. For the past 7 years, Atkinson was a Lieutenant and served as Division Commander over Training, Special Operations, Tactical Team, Motor Scouts, Patrol and Internal Affairs. Prior to his employment in Homewood, Atkinson began his law enforcement career working for 3 years for the Birmingham Police Department.
Chief Atkinson obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Auburn University. He is also a graduate of the 244th Session of the FBI National Academy, and completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program, and the Rural Executive Management Institute. Atkinson is married and has two children. They live in Homewood.
Chief Atkinson is a strong proponent of community policing, and believes that collaborating with the community will bring positive change and promote trust and confidence between the citizens of Irondale and its police department.
